Newton Christmas Party 2014

Newton held their Christmas party on Monday 8th December, 20 of our members attended.

Proceedings started off with a welcoming glass of mulled wine, heated through in one of the Memorial Hall’s large kettles. We think that the groups who also use the hall may get a surprise when they next brew up a cuppa!

Gina found a novel way to heat up the mulled wine!
Next were carols accompanied by Margaret Williamson on the piano and then the lunch! Everyone contributed to some delicious fare, cold meats, quiches, salads and cheese followed by a wonderful chocolate torte and a pavlova.

Getting to grips with the carols.
We probably should have drunk the wine first!
An art quiz followed which Kath’s team, as usual, won with ease, and finally Betty persuaded two teams to play against one another at charades.  It all went to show what a talented group we have at Newton, not only artists but excellent cooks, singers and actors!

Our thanks go to Lin who organised it all and who was unable to attend as Ron was in hospital. We all wish him a speedy recovery.

Beningbrough Exhibition now open !

The Newton on Ouse Art Group’s exhibition opened in the Hayloft Room at Beningbrough Hall on Saturday 6th December. Everyone was so busy setting up on Friday that I nearly missed the photo opportunities!

Ron getting to grips with hanging on wall panels!

Please come along and support your Art Group and spread the word among your friends.

There are some beautiful art works that would make wonderful unique Christmas presents.  We are donating 10% of proceeds to the National Trust.

The Exhibition continues every weekend up to Christmas from 11am – 3.30pm.

See these links for more details and directions.

Newton New Members

Four new members have joined the Newton Art Group in the last few months and so I thought you may like to know a little bit about them and their pictures.

First up is Sue Nettleton, who is new to the area and joined us at the end of the summer.  Studying art to A level at school she has continued that interest to the present day. These two pictures are ones that Sue  submitted to the recent York Art Society exhibition.

Next is Lynda Baker who joined us just a few weeks ago. Lynda describes herself as a self taught artist who has attended many workshops and art courses over the years including nine years studying Life Drawing. She tells me she is on the look out for some young, hunky men for models!

Graham Rogers also joined Newton in the summer after visiting our May exhibition.  Lin immediately saw his potential and he soon became a member of the committee where he is now Secretary.  Graham has painted since boyhood but recent retirement has given him the time to pursue his passion for painting. He considers himself to be an amateur and enjoys painting in watercolour and acrylics. His favourite discipline of the moment is the ‘wet on wet oils’ style of painting by Bob Ross.

Finally, our most recent new member is Luisa Holden, a very talented York based artist. She trained at the North Wales School of Art and Design and has exhibited throughout Yorkshire, Chester, North Wales and Scotland. She has also taught painting and drawing via the University of York Continued Learning through Education programme.  Luisa works in acrylics, watercolours, pastels and mixed media in a loose representational style.  She is currently working on a series of Yorkshire Landscapes.

Last Weekend's Robert Brindley Workshop

Newton Art Group was extremely happy to host a two day Robert Brindley workshop recently..

Each day began with a practical demonstration by Robert, who worked in both watercolour and oils.  Members then moved on to working on their own pieces, with constructive feedback from Robert and the other participants.

Thanks to Robert for finding a slot in his schedule for this great event. His guidance throughout the weekend was invaluable.

A total of twenty four artists contributed to the show and thirteen pictures were sold from the main exhibition room together with many cards and unframed prints from the back room. In total the sales were in excess of £2000, exceeding last year’s takings.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Peter Geraghty for the  generous donation of a beautiful picture for the raffle prize and to all the members who so kindly gave up their time to set up, display and steward the exhibition.

At the time of writing, we are awaiting confirmation of dates for a further Exhibition to be held at Benningborough Hall prior to Christmas.  Watch this space!!

Newton on Ouse Art Group Activities

Workshops and demonstrations are a frequent and popular part of our group's schedule of events.

In November 2013, Robert Brindley ran a weekend workshop for the group covering both watercolour and oils. Some excellent work was produced over the two days which culminated in a professional critique from Robert.

In March 2014 the well known Botanical Artist, Colin Swinton, gave a master class in the use of gesso and tissue paper in watercolour.

The objective of the workshop was to see the sort of results that can be achieved by introducing texture to water colour paintings.  In the morning session Colin demonstrated the use of tissue paper and watercolour paint where tissue paper is crumpled and then stuck to watercolour paper.

The afternoon session was on the use of gesso and watercolour where gesso is applied to watercolour paper and then painted. The texturing could be more exact with this method whereas with tissue the texturing was more random. Everyone enjoyed the day and some excellent paintings were produced.

Our next demonstrator will be Jackie Midgley,  who will cover mixed media and portrait painting on Saturday 5th April.

This is a special year for our group as we celebrate our 50th anniversary and to encourage young artists we are delighted to be holding a children’s competition for Linton on Ouse and Forest of Galtres Primary schools; the prize winning pictures will be on display during our annual exhibition.

The exhibition is held every year over the early May bank holiday weekend in the Newton village hall. The standard is always very high and of a great variety and usually receives promotion and coverage from local media and our friends at York Art Society.    The venue is close to Beningborough Hall, so this is also a great opportunity to visit the beautiful National Trust property.
