Final Day of the Spring Exhibition
Our 52nd Art Exhibition has seen quite a few original pictures sold, together with many cards and prints.
There has been much interest in our new feature, The Little Picture Show.
These pictures are all originals and mounted but unframed. They are sold at £20 each and are a terrific bargain.
We have a selection of frames to fit the pictures with prices which range from £4 - £6.
Tomorrow is our last day so come along to The Parish Hall, Newton-on-Ouse, YO30 2BY to see our wonderful pictures - and have a cup of tea or coffee and a biscuit before we close at 4pm.
Admission is free.

Visit to an SAA Open Day
Lin and I set off early on Wednesday morning for our trip to Newark and an Open Day with the SAA. After a fairly straight forward journey down we were welcomed with a coffee, biscuits and a goody bag.
There were around 100 people there but divided into four groups for the various activities. First of all our group had a tour around the building, seeing where the telephone orders came in and how they track calls to make sure you are not kept hanging on the phone. Then onto the warehouse where all the stock is kept and where the orders are packed.
It was then onto the shop where new products were being demonstrated and various items from the current months promotion were on offer.
Lunch followed and a chance to sit and chat with other visitors, some from as far afield as Glasgow and London. Then it was back into a workshop with Jeremy Ford who demonstrated a sunset in pastel for us to copy. Reasonably presentable pictures were produced.
Finally we had a look around the Art Challenge Exhibition of around 32,200 small pictures on trading cards. It was magnificent and really mind blowing!
The SAA is awaiting confirmation that they do in fact have the world record. They had even catalogued each picture so that you could locate your own.
Then it was time for a final farewell and the drive home. If anyone is thinking of going along Lin and I would really recommend it. There was no pressure to buy anything just a very big welcome from all the SAA owners and staff.

Looking forward to Spring
Newton-on-Ouse Art Group are preparing to hold their 52nd annual exhibition of original artworks, prints, and cards on Saturday 30th April, Sunday 1st and Monday 2nd May from 10am to 4pm each day.
Judith Hartup, a resident of the village and a member of the group, will be showing her botanical and watercolour pictures. Judith’s work is inspired by nature and her work includes plants, insects, birds and other creatures. She is currently studying sea creatures for her new project entitled ‘the world under the sea’.
Judith explained that her botanical work is often painted on manuscript vellum using a magnifying glss to pick out the fine detail. The vellum is prepared by sticking it to a board covered with white paper to prevent bending and then treated with pumice powder before it is ready to paint on. She finds it is worth the effort as the advantage of painting on vellum with watercolour is that it can achieve fine detail and colour ranging from subtle to very rich.
Judith says “Painting natural subjects really develops your observation of how amazing and varied natural subjects grow and develop.”
The exhibition includes original framed work including, watercolour, pastels, oils and collage. Also for sale are prints and cards with prices to suit everyone.

Helen Cassidy Workshop 5th March 2016
The workshop was all about putting texture into our paintings, in particular the use of tissue paper.
Helen showed us several other ideas but we were to concentrate on tissue paper. First of all boards were covered with gesso and crumpled tissue paper was carefully applied and then a further coat of gesso added on top. These were then left to dry.
Helen demonstrated the paint effects that could be achieved and we set to work.
Judith getting to grips with her underwater painting of seahorses and coral and a change of medium from watercolour to acrylic.

Jean produced a wonderfully atmospheric picture!
And finally Sylvia having a personal critique from Helen.
At the end of this most enjoyable session Helen held a final critique of everyone’s work. She felt the standard was very high considering it was technique that most of us had not done before and she hoped we would use this technique in future paintings.
Our next workshop tutor will be Paul Talbot Greaves on 2nd April showing us his own personal style with water colour.

Mini Charity Art Exhibition at St Leonard's
Our friends over at York Art Society are starting 2016 with a small charity art exhibition in support of St Leonard's Hospice.
This will run from Friday 15th January to Saturday 30th January at the Hospice Shop, 1 Heworth Village, York. YO31 1AE. There will be a short preview evening between 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm on Friday 15th. The exhibition then continues during shop opening hours which are 10:00 am to 4:00 pm Monday to Saturday. There will be original art on show, alongside a few prints and unframed originals. 20% of the sales will be donated to the charity.
The Heworth shop is one of 11 that St Leonard's operates in the York area. All money raised from the shops goes directly to the care of patients and support for their families. If you're interested in learning more about their work, follow this link to their own site.

And let's start the year by looking back at a pre-Christmas event ........
Monday, 7th December 2015. While the good residents of Milan assembled to celebrate the Feast of St Ambrose, much closer to home the members of Newton on Ouse Art Group were gathering for their annual Christmas lunch.
Attendees were welcomed with a glass of mulled wine. Then Margret Williamson played the piano whilst members sang carols.
Newton on Ouse Art Group would like to wish all members and friends a happy, prosperous and creative 2016.

Robert Brindley Workshop
Fourteen of our members attended The Robert Brindley Workshop on 31/10/2015.
In the first half, Robert gave an inspiring demonstration of a beautiful sunset in oils.
In the practical session that followed we were encouraged us to paint our own scenes, using oils or acrylic.
At the end of the afternoon, Robert gave constructive criticism of the finished work. Some great paintings were produced during the day thanks to his guidance and advice.

SAA ‘Lay Flat’ Challenge taken up by Newton on Ouse Art Group
Sharon certainly challenged us with this last minute entry!
The Challenge is to complete 20 paintings and to return the completed book to the SAA by 12 June.
Our recent Exhibition was the springboard for getting artists involved and to date we have five paintings completed.
As you can see we have some wonderful paintings to date and if you have not already got your name on the list to have the book to paint in, please contact Sharon Longcroft.
As you will only have about a day to do your painting you might need to get your thinking caps on or even copy a previous painting you have done!
